I have decided that I need to keep my own personal journal. I realized that unless I write things down I will never remember and there are a lot of things I need to remember. I have also been seriously thinking about my writing and how I haven’t done much of any lately, including my poetry. I have decided I need to devote some time to that….possible take a writing seminar if at all possible so I can get the words that are in my head on the page and to get my creative juices flowing again.
Sunday was my book club meeting and I had 10 people who RSVP’d and said they were coming and in the end there were only 3 people including me making 4 in total. At first I took it personally…I mean I had this huge list of attendees that I sent evites to and when they all say oh a book club is a great idea and don’t show up…. Like I said I took it personally. L talked me out of that. And now it’s been a little over a year since the club started and I love the people who come every month and read and have such interesting things to say. I love the different types of food…you know me, eternally greedy. Some of the people in the book club aren’t even people that I knew personally beforehand but were invited by other people who thought they would be interested and so it’s nice to meet new people because I swear after you leave college meeting people seems a whole lot harder.
The bookclub meeting….the book was good, I really liked her writing (Edwidge Danticat) and the topic was interesting a former torturer (The Dew Breaker). I did some research on Haitian history afterward to get a better understanding of the country and there are a lot of things that I didn’t know before I started reading the book that gives me a greater appreciation for the struggle. I always knew that they were the first Caribbean country to get freedom under Colonialism and I know that many of the countries in the Caribbean struggle with their governments because of corruption and political unrest but Haiti seems to have some really serious things going on….so I respect the struggle of the people. The only thing about the book club meeting that I couldn’t get with was the way our waitress kept trying to force us to order all this stuff we didn’t want. I mean ok appetizers is one thing but she kept telling us ok we are preparing your dessert…we didn’t ask for any. And she kept saying it! Finally we had to be like we just want the check PLEASE! We were in there for so long too, it took forever to get our food and all that but other than that everything was alright. Except that night I had some kinda wicked stomach cramps, I think it might have been the fried turkey….I don’t think it agreed with me at all. I should have gotten the goat. Oh well.
The weather outside is wet and windy and I’m here at work paying more attention to the rain outside than anything. These hurricanes are killing me really. Granted we arent dealing with anything like they are in FL and LO so I shouldnt complain but this rain is coming in buckets. The one good thing is that its definitely cuddling weather. But alas I will be going home to finish some more of my “room renewal project” lol. I still have some painting to do and I have a crapload of stuff that I am tossing out because quite frankly I can hoard and I need to stop that. But its coming along slowly but surely. I will have to share pics once I am totally done which will be a while still because I want to buy a chest and new couch….but we shall see

after that sumptuous meal, I felt fiiiiiine. Matterfact, I could have gone for some dessert. I think she might have mentioned that it would be coming up next but we didn't really acknowledge her. I'm not sure but I just think I might remember something.
Thanks for working so hard on this book club. It puts a little culture in my life, believe me. I'm inviting a friend next time, the one who gave me the next book we'll be reading.
